During my time at Lewisham Youth Theatre, I have had the opportunity to work with a small group of children. Every Monday evening between 4pm and 6pm, I would work with a team of 3 to run an Art and design session. Each session covers a topic based on set design and art craft. The sessions were tailored to maximise the children time to broaden and develop their understanding of art, craft and design.
On Saturday 1st February, I was offered the opportunity to take the children on a visit to the National Theatre. We took them on a backstage tour and took part in the theatre's Lighting Workshop. This was once in a lifetime opportunity as the children got to witness the set construction of the new show at the Olivier Theatre. They were able to meet some of the prop makers and costumer designers.
The lighting workshop consisted of testing out the lighting desk, learning about the different lights used and what they are used for.
This workshop and visit provided a welcome opportunity to expose the children to different forms of art, crafts and design at a younger age and allow them the chance to reflect and show them there is more to art, craft and design than just learning how to paint and draw.
